Originally opened to service the Cheetham's Salt Works located on the shores of Corio Bay to the north. A 2 foot gauge tramway was built between the siding and the salt works alongside Wilsons Road. The tramway was originally horse drawn, with diesel and petrol mechanical locomotives later used. A large shed spanned the tramway and loop siding.

Upon the closure of the railway, salt was trucked to the Geelong goods shed where it was transferred to rail. Full road haulage took over when the goods shed closed in the late 1980s.
