The first crossing of Gordon Avenue and the railway was on the level, and was provided upon the opening of the South Western line to Winchelsea in 1876. Interlocked gates were provided at the crossing from 1884, controlled by the adjacent Geelong B signal box.

In 1917 as part of the improvements to Geelong Station, Gordon Avenue was moved under the railway lines. Four lanes were provided for road traffic underneath, and a number of spans for railway traffic, however only a few tracks remain today.
