North Melbourne Junction is the location where the Upfield line branches from the main suburban lines. It is also the point where the Essendon Flyover lines branch off, and freight lines connect to the main suburban and Upfield lines. It was once controlled by it's own signal box, until being absorbed into Metrol in the 1980s. The 1980s also saw a rearrangement of the tracks, in conjunction with the opening of the underground City Loop, and the end of regular though running of western and eastern lines.
