Waurn Ponds Creek

Watercourse
Line: Geelong and Warrnambool

The Waurn Ponds Creek bridge is located in the middle of an embankment between the Barwon River bridge and Marshall station. The creek itself joins the Barwon River a short distance downstream of the rail bridge, during normal weather is no more than a ditch. However, when the Barwon River floods the entire surrounding floodplain is covered with water, and this bridge provides an important additional opening in the railway embankment across the Barwon River valley.

The bridge is identical in construction to that over the nearby Barwon River, with concrete pylons supporting twin steel plate girders, with the rails being fixed to timber transoms. This bridge was also constructed in the 1960s, replacing a timber trestle. In February 2011 the bridge was refurbished, with new handrails being provided the full length of the bridge.
