When the Colac - Alvie branch line was first opened, the junction of the lines was at Colac station, with the two tracks running parallel for about 1.6 kilometre (1 mile) until the branch actually diverged north.
This was altered in 1943 as part of an economy drive, with the branch line track being removed and the rail used elsewhere, a set of points being provided at the actual point of divergence. Mortlake Junction was provided at the same time for the same reason. Alvie Junction remained until the closure of the line in 1954.
