In February 2016 it was announced that the Kororoit Creek Road level crossing on the Altona line would be removed. In October 2016 it was announced that a rail-over-road design, incorporating partial duplication of the Altona Loop, was preferred.
Contracts were signed in May 2017 with work starting soon after. The double track bridge was constructed during a 43-day rail shutdown from 16 June 2018, with the railway reopening a week earlier than expected.
Following the level crossing removal project, double track on the Altona line now ends at the down end of the new rail bridge.
