The Princes Highway originally crossed the railway here, with the 'Old Melbourne Road' name applying to the road today. In 1939 the highway was deviated south around the Laverton RAAF base to permit the expansion of the runways there. 10 km in length, the Princes Freeway, Laverton overpass was also built.
