The Princes Highway originally crossed the railway here, with the 'Old Melbourne Road' name applying to the road today. In 1939 the highway was deviated south around the Laverton RAAF base to permit the expansion of the runways there. 10 km in length, the Princes Freeway, Laverton overpass was also built.
In 2019 it was announced that the Level Crossing Removal Authority would replace the level crossing with a new road over rail bridge located to the east, creating a direct connection between Princes Freeway, Old Geelong Road and Heaths Road.
