Opened as Pettavel Road, the name was shortened to Pettavel by November 1904. It was initially opened as a crossing station, the up and down home signal being removed in March 1900, with staff locks provided to the main line points.

The 1929 track chart of the line showed the platform on the northern (up) side of the line, opposite a loop siding and goods platform. The station was made no-one in charge on July 12, 1939 and closed to all traffic in August 1952, the siding and staff locks removed in November the same year.
