The Princes Highway overpass was constructed as part of the state government rail level crossing elimination fund established in 1955. Completed in 1963/64 a 1km long deviation around Dennington was constructed, which also included a new crossing of the Merri River. The concrete overpass carries two-lanes of traffic across a single rail track, as well as a single lane of traffic westbound from the highway into Dennington.
